The Effects of Good Posture on Spinal Health

Darren Kincaid - Tuesday, November 28, 2017
Austin's TexStar Chiropractic Offers Tips on Posture

Hello again dear friends from Dr. Henry and his staff here at Austin Texas' TexStar ChiroporacticLet's talk posture!

We often hear that good posture is essential for good health. Good posture affects your overall wellbeing, specifically when it pertains to neck and spine health. We recognize poor posture when we see it in the form of unnatural body positions formed as a result of bad habits carried out over years. Chiropractors in general have a real grasp of the importance and necessity of good posture.

What is posture? Posture is the position in which we hold our bodies while standing, sitting, or lying down. Good posture is the correct alignment of body parts supported by the right amount of muscle tension against gravity. Without posture and the muscles that control it, we would simply fall to the ground.

Normally, we do not consciously maintain normal posture. Instead, certain muscles do it for us, and we don't even have to think about it. Several muscle groups, including the hamstrings and large back muscles, are critically important in maintaining good posture. While the ligaments help to hold the skeleton together, these postural muscles, when functioning properly, prevent the forces of gravity from pushing us over forward. Postural muscles also maintain our posture and balance during movement.

Consequences of poor posture: Poor posture can lead to excessive strain on our postural muscles and may even cause them to relax, when held in certain positions for long periods of time. For example, you can typically see this in people who bend forward at the waist for a prolonged time in the workplace. Their postural muscles are more prone to injury and back pain.

Can I correct my poor posture? In a word, yes. Remember, however, that long-standing postural problems will typically take longer to address than short-lived ones, as often the joints have adapted to your long-standing poor posture. Conscious awareness of your own posture and knowing what posture is correct will help you consciously correct yourself. With practice, the correct posture for standing, sitting, and lying down will gradually replace your old posture. In turn, this will help you move toward a better and healthier body position.

How can Dr. Henry help?  Those of you with long-standing postural problems will likely require the help of a chiropractor to assist both the body and the brain to correct themselves.  Dr. Henry can assist you with proper posture, including recommending exercises to strengthen your core postural muscles. With the use of certain chiropractic techniques, Dr. Henry can also assist you with choosing proper postures during your activities, helping reduce your risk of injury. Call us to learn about how TexStar Chiropractic can help you correct bad posture and the associated painful ills that you suffer as a result!

Do Insurance Plans Cover Chiropractic Care? (Yes They Do)

Darren Kincaid - Tuesday, November 21, 2017

One of the frequently asked questions that our Austin Texas chiropractic care team here at TexStar Chiropractic gets is: "Does my health insurance cover chiropractic care services"?  The short answer is chiropractic care is included in most health insurance plans, including major medical plans, workers compensation, Medicare, some Medicaid plans, and Blue Cross Blue Shield plans for federal employees, among others.

Our team at TexStar Chiropractic will verify each patient's benefits with their insurance company and present each patient with a treatment plan that shows the anticipated insurance coverage for each procedure. We work closely with each patient and their insurance provider to ensure that our patients are utilizing the maximum benefit from their insurance.

Additionally, many of our patients are thrilled to discover that their chiropractic care services are covered by both their flexible savings accounts (FSA) and health savings account (HSA) programs.  In fact chiropractic patients suffering neck and back pain here in Austin (and across the nation as well) are so pleased with the results of their chiropractic treatment that they plan their next years FSA and HSA contributions to cover their out of pocket expenses for regular maintenance care.

Millions of Americans every year stress about FSA accounts during the latter part of the calendar year.  They stress about the "use or loose" nature of those hard-earned FSA dollars.  Yet, we sadly witness it time and time again in the "I wish I had known" comments of our patients who discover that they could have long ago began their chiropractic treatment for back and neck pain using their FSA.

Let us help you take the stress out of all things insurance, HSA, and FSA-related.  You focus on your neck and spinal health and moving forward to once again living a quality and pain free life.

Spinal Manipulation - It's Just What the (Medical) Doctor Orders

Darren Kincaid - Friday, November 17, 2017

TexStar Chiropractic, Austin, TXIf you are suffering from back, neck, shoulder pain, or constant migraines, spinal manipulation can provide relief. "Spinal manipulation" is designed to relieve pressure on joints and reduce inflammation. Your doctor at TexStar Chiropractic will use a combination manual mobilization of joints and muscles, advanced physical rehab, and other non-invasive treatment to help you reduce pain and function better.

Your Austin Texas chiropractic professionals here in Southwest Austin wish to share with you some statistics regarding the success of spinal manipulation in patients who seek non-drug treatments for pain relief.

In 2017, the American College of Physicians released updated low back pain guidelines that recommend first using non-drug treatments, such as spinal manipulation, for acute and chronic low back pain.

  • The Journal of the American Medical Association in 2017 supports the use of spinal manipulative therapy as a first line treatment for acute low back pain. 95% of past-year chiropractic users say spinal manipulation is effective, and 97% of past-year chiropractic users are likely to see a chiropractor if they have neck/back pain.
  • In a consumer survey, chiropractic outperformed all other back pain treatments, including prescription medication, deep-tissue massage, yoga, pilates, and over-the-counter medication therapies.
  • Chiropractors are the highest rated healthcare practitioner for low-back pain treatments above physical therapists (PTs), specialist physician/MD (i.e., neurosurgeons, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons), and primary care physician/MD (i.e., family or internal medicine).
  • With prescription pain drug abuse now classified as an epidemic in the United States and the number of spinal fusions soaring 500% over the last decade, the essential services provided by chiropractors represent a primary care approach for the prevention, diagnosis and conservative management of back pain and spinal disorders that can often enable patients to reduce or avoid the need for these riskier treatments.
  • In 2015, the Joint Commission, the organization that accredits more than 20,000 health care systems in the U.S. (including every major hospital), recognized the value of non-drug approaches by adding chiropractic to its pain management standard.

At TexStar Chiropractic we take great satisfaction in educating our Southwest Austin community with a host of spinal manipulative techniques. These techniques have proven over time to our patients to provide a higher quality of life.
