Pinched Nerve

A pinched nerve is what people say when an arm or leg tingles, burns, or feels weak. Your doctor sorts a disc, a swollen joint, or a nerve trapped farther down the limb.

What it feels like

The Sensations People Bring In

Where the feeling sits, and what changes it, is what separates a nerve from a muscle.
  • Tingling or buzzing in specific fingers or toes
  • A limb that feels heavy, clumsy, or unreliable
  • Symptoms that fire when you turn your head or bend a certain way
  • Grip that has quietly weakened, or a foot that slaps when you walk

What the Visit Measures

Sensation, grip or leg strength, and reflexes show whether a nerve is actually involved. Neck movements that reproduce arm symptoms point one way. Back movements that reproduce leg symptoms point another.

The Spine Is Not the Only Place a Nerve Gets Squeezed

A nerve can be irritated at the spine, under a tight muscle, at the shoulder, or well down the arm at the elbow or wrist. Carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel produce tingling that people reasonably call a pinched neck. Which fingers are involved, and what position provokes it, usually separates them.

Care After the Source Is Clearer

A joint that is not moving may be adjusted. A disc that lines up with the nerve symptoms may be treated with spinal decompression. If the pattern looks like a nerve problem outside the spine, the chiropractor will say so and refer.

Why Numbness and Weakness Are Tracked Separately

Altered sensation is uncomfortable and often recovers slowly even when things are going well. Measurable weakness is a different matter, and it is rechecked at each visit. Strength that keeps dropping while under care is a reason to refer, not a reason to add sessions.

Nerve Symptoms That Should Not Wait

These need same-day medical assessment rather than a chiropractic appointment.

  • Weakness that is clearly progressing hour by hour
  • Numbness with any loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Sudden numbness or weakness on one whole side of the body
  • Trouble speaking, swallowing, or seeing alongside the symptoms
  • Symptoms that began immediately after a significant head or neck injury

Questions

Common Questions

Answers from the chiropractors. Anything specific to you is for your doctor, not a web page.
Is numbness an emergency?

Spreading weakness, or numbness with bladder or bowel changes, is an emergency. Stable tingling that has been the same for days can be examined in the clinic.

Why do you test my grip if my neck hurts?

Grip strength maps to specific nerve levels in the neck. A measurable drop tells the chiropractor which level to focus on and gives a number to retest against later.

Can a pinched nerve heal on its own?

Many irritated nerves settle with time and load changes. Care is aimed at removing what keeps provoking it and at catching the cases that are not settling.

Do I need a nerve conduction study?

Not usually to begin with. If the picture suggests a problem outside the spine or the findings are not adding up, the chiropractor will refer you for that testing.

Why does it feel worse at night?

Sleeping positions hold joints at end range for hours and there is nothing to distract you. Which position makes it worse is a genuinely useful clue, so pay attention to it before the visit.
