Knee Pain

Knee pain that limits stairs, trails, or getting out of a car can come from the joint surfaces, the meniscus, or from the hip and back changing how you step. TexStar examines the knee and the way you walk before picking a tool.

What it feels like

How the Knee Tends to Complain

Which activities hurt, and where on the joint, narrows this down quickly.
  • Stairs going down being worse than stairs going up
  • A deep ache after a walk rather than during it
  • Stiffness for the first few steps after sitting through a film
  • Pain on one side of the joint line you can point to with a finger

Knee on Trac, and Where It Is

Bee Cave and Buda have Knee on Trac decompression for some arthritic or meniscus-related knees. Austin and Dripping Springs do not. Those offices can still examine a knee and use adjustments, rehab, laser, or spot cryotherapy when they fit.

The Hip and the Foot Are Part of the Exam

The knee is a hinge caught between two joints that rotate. A hip that will not extend or a foot that collapses inward changes the line the knee tracks along every step you take. Treating only the knee in that situation buys time rather than a result, so the chiropractor watches you walk.

Arthritis Does Not Mean Nothing Can Be Done

Wear on an x-ray is extremely common past middle age and correlates loosely with how much a knee hurts. Strength around the joint, how you load it, and how stiff it gets are all things that can change. That is the honest target, rather than a promise about the cartilage.

What This Visit Will Not Do

The clinic does not perform knee surgery or injections. A knee that locks, gives way completely, or is hot and swollen with fever should be seen by a medical physician. Decompression does not rebuild cartilage.

Step by step

A First Visit for Knee Pain

Book Bee Cave or Buda if you specifically want the Knee on Trac device considered.

  • 1A consultation on which activities the knee has taken away from you
  • 2Examination of the knee, the hip above it, and your walking pattern
  • 3A trial treatment, which may be Knee on Trac at Bee Cave or Buda
  • 4A findings review, including a referral if the joint needs one

Knees That Belong with a Physician First

These are not chiropractic first-visit problems. Get them assessed medically.

  • A joint that is hot, red, and swollen with a fever
  • A knee locked in one position that will not straighten
  • The knee buckling completely and dropping you
  • Obvious deformity or immediate ballooning after an injury
  • Calf swelling, warmth, and pain, which needs a clot ruled out

What the $98 New-Patient Visit Includes

One appointment: consultation, exam, a trial treatment chosen from the exam, and a findings review. Mention the offer when you schedule. Restrictions may apply. Results vary.
  1. 1

    Consultation

You tell the chiropractor what hurts, what you want to get back to, and which clinic you are visiting.

  2. 2

    Exam

A neuro-musculo-skeletal exam looks for the source: the joint, the muscle, and the nerve.

  3. 3

    Trial Treatment

One session of spinal decompression, cold laser, or spot cryotherapy, chosen from the exam. That session is included in the visit.

  4. 4

    Findings Review

Your Chiropractor will go over the results of the exam and discuss a plan of care.

Questions

Common Questions

Answers from the chiropractors. Anything specific to you belongs in the exam, not on a web page.
I have a meniscus tear on an MRI. Can I still be examined?

Yes. Some tears are treated without surgery when the knee is stable. The exam, not the report title, decides whether chiropractic care is reasonable.

Which clinics have Knee on Trac?

Bee Cave and Buda. Austin and Dripping Springs do not have the machine, though both can examine and treat a knee with other tools.

Do you give cortisone injections?

No. There are no injections at these clinics. If your exam suggests that is the right next step, the chiropractor will tell you and refer.

Why are you looking at my hip when my knee hurts?

Because the hip controls the line the knee travels along. Weakness there is one of the more common reasons a knee keeps getting irritated by ordinary walking.

Can I still walk and exercise?

Usually, with adjustments to how much and on what surface. The chiropractor would rather modify what you enjoy than have you stop, which tends to make the joint stiffer.
